          Formative Assessment
Assesing 21st Century Skills and Competencies

21st Century Education includes Individualized Learning and Assessment as well as acquiring Key Skills and Competencies.

How can traditional report cards and grades effectively portray the 21st Century learner to parents, future teachers and to the students themselves?

How can we provide a clear picture of the skills and competencies of every unique student?

Assessment in K-12 education is changing.  As we change from heavily weighted summative and standardized assessment towards a formative and competency or skills-based assessment model we need to find tools that can reflect the diversity of our students and their skill development.

Not all skills or competencies are measurable using summative or standardized testing.  These skills are often best represented through multi-media, inquiry and project-based learning.

Elements of Formative Assessment:  These elements are necessary to assess what a student's strenghts and weaknesses are and to guide our teaching.  Too often tradtional assessment fails in one or more of these areas.

  • identifying the gap

  • feedback

  • learning progressions

  • student involvement  (Fact Sheet, 2012)

We need to see the whole student over time and across many skills.

Portfolio Assessment meets all these needs.

Unlike traditional report cards, Y2Y Portfolios provide a clear picture of a student’s growth and learning in all areas, including the 21st Century skills our students need to succeed.
